🇬🇧 Andreas Koch plays David Kellner on a 11-stringed guitar

Updated: Feb 22

For context:

The classical guitar as we know today sits in midrange tuning, not too high, not to low when compared with other instruments – which is good. Therefore we can play music composed for other instruments after arranging it for our instrument, of course. The problem is when you want to play early music such as this beautiful piece by David Kellner on a six strings guitar, for instance. It was composed originally for lute and as you may know, back in the Baroque period the lute could have 11 to 13 courses (early 18th century). Later in the beginning of the 19th century Carulli played with a 10-string guitar called decacordo and even wrote a complete method for this specific instrument. The six string guitar was still the mainstream variation of this instrument due to its success among virtuoso guitar players such as Molino, Carcassi, Sor and Giuliani.

Listen to Andreas Koch (via @siccasguitar) presenting his deep and clean rendition of a masterpiece by Kellner on an 11-stringed guitar. Beautiful.

Mooi.
