Guitar Lesson: La Catedral - analysing Agustín Barrios' manuscript vs editions

Hey, welcome to another UniGuitar lesson!

La Catedral was composed for classical guitar in 1921 (Montevideo) by Agustín Barrios Mangoré. Barrios wrote originally two movements (Andante Religioso - Allegro Solemne) and later on a Preludio was added - Preludio Saudade. It is fascinating the amount of versions we have listened of this masterpiece overtime, mostly due to the variety of interpretations Barrios did of it. La Catedral suffered modifications throughout Barrios' life, having been renotated in 1938 (La Habana), in 1939 (Costa Rica) and in 1943 (El Salvador), for instance. In this video I will be analysing and comparing which seems to be the 1938 manuscript (download it through our music sources database) with the existent publications by Richard Stover and Jesús Benites.

⭐If you would like to get access to the full version of this lesson from which you can download a revised sheet music with fingerings included and also a detailed analysis and more tips to support your practice of Allegro Solemne , please follow the link to premium version.

This video is divided in 4 parts:

  • Introduction

  • Analysis of the form and repetitions

  • Comparison of the manuscript with editions

  • Insight on analysis, interpretation and fingerings

Hopefully you will find this lesson interesting and valuable for your research and practice. Its main goal is to trigger your interest in looking into the sources of eventual works you might want to work on, before you make your own interpretation of it. Remember, from the moment you use an edited version of a a piece of music you are already using someone else's vision of the source and not yours!

Have a lovely week!
